P.E

Hunnyhill Primary is proud to have been awarded the School Games Gold Award for 2023/2024!

Introduction to PE:
Physical Education (P.E.) helps pupils to develop physically, personally and socially. The children work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences that P.E. offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging situations.
Intent
At Hunnyhill primary School we aim to develop a fun and high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed.
We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Our pupils will have opportunities to compete in sport and activities that build character and help embed our school values such as Challenge, Respect, Resilience and Teamwork and lead them to develop transferrable skills and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Implementation
P.E at Hunnyhill is taught as a subject, but also integrated within other subjects where possible. Our P.E curriculum incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all pupils develop the confidence, tolerance, and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses.
Pupils have the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development, secure and build upon a range of skills, develop good sporting attitudes, and learn in a safe environment. Pupils have the opportunity to engage in extra-curricular activities during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. Our inclusive approach enables all pupils to participate in P.E and not only encourages physical development but also well-being for all pupils.
Impact
Our P.E curriculum will impact greatly on our children’s ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make appropriate choices about their physical and mental health.
P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. At Hunnyhill, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Students at Hunnyhill are given the opportunity to visualise their journey through sport. Our progression road maps show what it takes to become confident at the sport or activity they are learning in P.E and the range of skills it requires.
The role of the Sports Ambassadors is to inspire and motivate others, as well as sharing their enjoyment of P.E and School Sport, by encouraging and supporting those less active. They are advocates, role models and natural leaders of other young people. The Sports Ambassadors work alongside the School Sports coordinator to help organise sports events, keep the sports notice board up to date, plan and run school activities, support the MSAs at lunchtime and at all times promote our school values.
Year 4 has recently introduced break time monitors to ensure every child feels safe and included. Their role includes: Monitoring behaviour Offering feedback to adults Ensuring correct use of equipment Actively engaging with everyone across the playground Supporting inclusion We aim to have break time monitors for every year group by the end of the school year.
Regular activity stimulates the brain as well as the body. Research has shown that children who are physically active are more alert and receptive to learning. A well-timed exercise break can reduce restlessness, bring children back on task, and make for a more effective learning environment. From Pre-school to Year 6, students take part in Wake Up Shake Up, Dances, virtual reality activities, exercises and more.
The Daily Mile aims to help all children improve their physical, emotional, social and mental health and wellbeing by encouraging them to run, jog or walk for 10 minutes every day. The Daily Mile can also help to increase concentration levels, reduce challenging behaviours and improve attainment.

Incentives:
At Hunnyhill, our aim is to keep children as active as possible throughout the day. We achieve this by giving our students the opportunity to run outdoors as part of our daily mile, take active breaks at various points in the day and encourage outdoor learning where possible.
